Expedition to Cerro Autana

The Cerro Autana is a tepuy of 1,240 m.s.n.m. It was declared a Natural Monument in 1978. It is located in the northeast corner of the Venezuelan Amazon, east of the Orinoco River and between the Cuao and Autana rivers within the Sipapo forest reserve (Piaroa ethnic territory).

The Cerro Autana is a sacred tepuy for the Piaroa ethnic group (in the Piaroa language it means «Sacred Mountain») which in its mythology represents the tree of life, from where all the fruits that served as sustenance for man and animals came out.

Its formation is of sandstone of Precambrian origin. Another characteristic of this unique tepuy is that at the top it is crossed by a cave unique in the world formed entirely by quartzite. This cave is about 400 meters long and reaches a height of 40 meters.
